What to Expect Before, During, and After Laser Tattoo Removal

While tattoos may be a great way to express yourself, many patients change their minds. In fact, many regret having certain tattoos on their bodies. Men and women often change their mind about their tattoo. Some regret having the tattoo of a significant other on their body, while others feel as though their tattoos no longer reflect who they are as they get older. Other times, adults may be unhappy with the tattoo because of poor quality artwork or fading inks. Whatever the reason, laser tattoo removal procedures have increased in popularity. With several treatments, most patients can fade away their unwanted tattoos and reveal clear skin free from ink.

At Carr Dermatology in Sugar Land, TX, patients can visit with Dr. Pamela Carr to determine fi they are a candidate for laser tattoo removal and to decide if it is right for their needs. Many are curious to know what they can expect before, during, and after their treatments.

Before

First, patients need to find out if they are a viable candidate for laser tattoo removal. This starts with a consultation with Dr. Pamela Carr. She will evaluate the type of tattoo present, as well as the size, colors, and quality of the tattoo, to give patients an idea of how many treatment sessions will be needed to achieve the desired results. Patients looking to completely remove the tattoo will need more treatments than patients looking to fade the tattoo to prepare it for coverage with another piece of artwork.

During

The procedure itself is achieved with the use of a high-energy laser. This laser works by breaking down the pigmentation in the ink. Then, the ink fades over time as the inks are safely absorbed by the body. Most patients are comfortable during their treatments, and can request the use of a topical anesthetic prior to starting. The time needed for treatment varies depending on the size of the tattoo.

After

Patients are given aftercare instructions to follow immediately after the treatment. Over time, with each treatment, the tattoo will fade more and more. While some patients continue to undergo treatment sessions to completely remove the tattoo, others are looking to lighten it to make it less noticeable or to prepare for coverup art.
